Where- fore confidering wich hirnfelfwhat to doe , he imagined, that in cafe he went by way of the Norch Sea to Nombre de Dios, he mighc be able to compafs forne ex- ploit in rhat City ; for he conceived that Pedro de Hinojofa had few people in that City, and chofe ali fecure, and in no apprehenfion ,of furprize by an enerny: wich this fancy he built four Frigaces, and fhipped a hundred íl:ouc Souldiers upon them in che Lake of Nicaragua, and paffed through that chanel whicb runnes into che Norch Sea. In che River which is called Chagre, it was bis fortune to cake a Boat with cerrain Negroes who fpake good Spanifh, and by them he was informed of ali matters that had paffed in Nombre ·de Dios, both as to the Souldiers and Of-. ficers which were quartered there. And taking ,chofe Negrees for their Guides, they carne about midnight to the City , where being landed, they irnmediacely fet upon the Houíe where Don Pedro de Cabre and Hernan Mexia, with forne Soul- diers were lodged, who being allarum'd with che noife of the people, put them- felves inro a poíl:ure to defend themfelves. Afelchior Verdugo having notice hereof, drew out his men into the field , with fuch others of che Cicy as had joined with him. Hinojofa imme- diately atracked them , and ar the firíl: charge feveral fell both on one Gde and che other, Bue when the Inhabitants of Nombre de Dios faw tbeir own Governour ar rhe head of the concrary party, rhey all retired to the Mounrain near the City., Verd~~o's meo would have given a íl:op 1 to the flight of che Inhabitants; but their di (Grder being fucb that they could not withíl:and the íhock of their Enemies, chey berook themíelves to their Frigates, wirh which they furpí-ized a Ship in Port ; and arming her wirh their Cannon, they made t]Jany íhot to the Town, bue with little or no damage, by reafon rhat che Veífel road at a diíl:ance for want of Water near the Íhoar.
