S Everal other prívate quarrels and challenges paífed ac that time, which are re- laced by Palentino, and particularly between M11rtin de RoMes and Paulo de Mme- fes, and many ocher fober and grave perfons, of whom 1 could tell many Stories, which 1 heard in chofe times, bue thac they feemed rather ridiculous, and to make fport , ehan any thing of moment. The Souldiers, to cau fe quarrels and difturbances to compafs cheir own ends, raifed falfo reporcs and lyes upon feveral rich and honourable Perfons, by which che fpirits of men being inflamed , fome ufe mighche made of their affiíl:ence: And fo they raifed a repon, that Paulo de Menefe1, who was then Governolli'of che Charw, had been difhoneíl: with rhe Wife of .Martín de Robles: Of which Palentino writes a long Chaprer, which be- ing too tec.lious to infert here , we fhall onely repeat che fubíl:ance of ir. This Difgrace being publifhed, and che Fault aggravated by che Souldiers who caQ_Je to take part wich one fide and the other ; and that things were proceeded ' fo far that both Parties were ready to engage , ao expedient was found to recon- cile all: which was, that Paulo de Mcnefes fhould abfolutely deny rhe faét; and to convince che World that the teílimony was a falíe and a notorious Lye, he was to marry rhe Daughter of Martin de Robles, a Child of feven years of age, and he himfelf of above feventy: by which meaos both Parties were reconciled, and che Souldiers on both fides difappointed and jeared by Martin de Robles , who was a wircy, pleafant man, and would neither fpare bis frl.end nor his foe, to lofe his jeíl:; and would laugh to rbink what fools he had made of bis friends, and foes che Souldiers, who were gaping to be employed in theíe quarrels.
