U PON the rurnour which ,Don {ohn de Mendopi caufed to be fpread in the Cicy of Los Reyes, the Judgesapp0inted the Marefchal Afo11fo de Alvar1<do to be Mayor of Couo, giving him Comrniffion t0 punifh the infolent and miltinous Souldiers chere, and to hindenhat growing Evil which for wanc of due correéti~ on was come to a degree unfupportable. So foon as chis new Oificer was come to Cou o, he apprehended fome of che Souldiers, who to fave themfelves had im- peached a cercain Citizen called Don Pedro Portocarrero: And having well exainined che cauíe of che principal Mutiniers, who _wer-e Francifco de Miranda and Alonfo Hernandez. Melgarejo, he hanged them up w1chout any r,egard to their Nobility , though chey claimed che privilege of Gentlemen. The which when Afonfo Barri- oneuevo knew, ;vho was alfo condemned, he fent to che Mayor or Governour, deíiring chat he might enjoy che privilege of a G_enclema~, that is, rhat he might have his Thtoat cut, and not be hanged ; alledgmg that m cafe he were hanged, he fhould defpair of his Salvation, and be _condemned éverlaíl:ingly to the Tor- ments of Hell.
