BooK VI. the moft difcontented of any was Francifco Hernande;:, Giron, who having not ferved formerly in Peru, butin Pafto on.ely, wher~ (as Palentino faith) he never had more chan an Efiate of íix hundred p1eces of Eight a year ; And now there being a propmtion fet out to him of about ten thoufand pieces of Eight a year , called Sacfahuana, which was in Co;:,co, and for~erly belonged to GonfaloPifarro; this Gentleman fo difdained the meannefs of 1t, tbat he could not forbear publickly coexprefs his diílike; and, conceiving a bigh efieem of his own merit, he .grew angry chat any man fuould be preferred or rewarded above himfelf: and to that excefs and diforder did bis paffion lead him , and tranfport to chofe ihdecem ex- preffions , chat his words were efieemed feditious, and not lefs than favouring cif Treafon : in chis humour he asked leave of the Arch-bifhdp to goe unto che Pre- fident and complain of his hard-ufage; for that he, who had ferved the befi of any, and therefore deferved tbe befi íhare, was turned offwith the rneaneíl: allot- ment. The Arch-bi!hop reproved him for bis infolent language, and denyed him leave. Bue Francifco Hernande~ rnade bold ro rake that which was refufed him , giving out abroad, thar he v as going to che City of Lo1 Reye1, to rnake his com- plaints unto him, who ought to confider them : which being made known to Li- cenciado Cianea, who was by joint Commiffion with the Arch-bifhop rnade Gover- nour and chief,Jufüciary of Cow ; he wrote him a Laccer, adviliog him to recuro, and noc augment the Troublés and Mutiníes which were in che Kingdorn, and which were apt to be inflarned by che Difcontents of many perfons , who had much more reafon to complain chao himfelf ; that he would doe well to conlider and take care how· he forfeiced al! ocher his former Services by fuch mutinous praétices as this , which would render him odious to all bis Majeíl:y's Officers and Mioillers. The Me!Ienger who carried this Letcer, overcook him inSacfahu- ana , being about four leagues diílanc from che Ciry, which when Hernande;:, had read, he made 'chis Anfwer, ;rhat he thought fit to be abfenc in that conjunéture, not to be coocerned in che Mutinies aod Troubles which he faw were corning; for he knew that the Souldiers would prefs him to be their Leader and Commander in chief 1 and moreover, that he was going to communicare many other matters unto che Prefidenc for his Majeíl:y's Services; ro which he added divers other irn- pertinences, difpleafing to Cianea : at which che Judge being greatly moved, he prefently difpacched Lecters to Captain LopeMartín, ( whom Palentino calls Alovfo de Mendofa ) and who, as we faid before, wasfent to che CharcM , to fupprefs In- furreétions, that with halfa dozen of his rnoíl: faichfull Souldiers he íhould inter- cept Hernandez, in bis journey or caufe him to retum back again to Couo. The day following Lope Martin With his fix Souldiers accordingly fet out, and raking che 0rdinary journeys of four or five leaguesa day , he overtook HernaHde;:, in cu- rampa, about twenty leagues from the City, who intended now to play a double game; for on one lide, he was willing to fhew bis readineís to ferve bis Majefiy; and on che other íide, he defigned to give contentmem to the Souldiers, by whom he was delirous to be eíl:eemed a Favourer of their pretenGons and reafons of complaint; as will appear by che Anfwer h~ gave at hls retum to the Judge Cian- ea when he was brought before him.
