We formerly !efe him on bis way to Arequepa, in purfüit of bis flying Enernies : U pon News of bis approach, . not onely tho[e who fled from the Battel of Huarina, but likewife the Inhab!tams ' · who were about fourty in nurnber, abandoned the City , and took the way to Los Reyes along the Sea-coafr; So foon as Carvajal was entred into the City , and had received information of their flight , without íl:op, or fiay_, or repofe fo much as of one hour, he dif. patched twemy five ofhis chief ana choice Harquebufiers after thetn, commanded by an experienced Souldier; who h ad all been iníl:ruéted i'n the School of an ex- cellent Maíl:er , and were for the.ir bravery termed his Sons : and thefe made fuch expedition in the purfuit of thern, that they overtook them t"(o days journey from Arequepa, and feizing upon every one of ~hem, they brought thern back a- gain to the City , not foffering one man of them to efrape. In this condition was Franci.fto de Carvajal in that City without friend or acquainrance , or houfe whereunto to refort , and fo remained for the fpace of three hours on horfe-back with bis whole family in a .comer of che Markec-place; when Miguel Cornejo having taken notice of hirn, ·as he was going to Church, at his return went up to him , and asked him what bis bufinefs was fo long there ; fince for above three hours he had obferved him in that place ? Sir, anfwered Carvajal, l have no kindred, friends or acquaintance in chis Countrey, and there being no Inns or places of publick entertainment whereumo I might goe to be re• ceived , 1 am enforced to fiay in this comer of the Street. To which Mif,uel Cor· nejo replyed , Y our Woríhip hat no need of another Inn than my Houfe , whereunto if you pleafe to goe, yo íhall find us ali .ready to ferve you to che utmoít of our power. After chis he carried chem to bis Houfe and emertained them untill fuch time as that Marquis--12on Francifco Pifarro befiowed fome Lands and Houíes on Carvajal in rhat City ; for he-\.vas Ofle of thofe choice Souldiers which Don Antonio de M endofa, Vice-king of Mexico, fent to che affiílence of che Marquis Pifarro, when Prince Manco Inca had raifed great Forces againíl: him 1 as we have formerly related in its due place. When Francifco de Carvajal underfiood that Miguel Cornejo was amongll che pri- foners that were taken, he caufed them ali to be brought t0 bis prefence, and ha- ving feen Cornejo, he rook him afide, and began verykindly to cornplain and chicle Lllll him.
