Pedro de Puelles had in prívate comrnunicated this bis intention to a certain Souldier of note, called Diego de Vrbina, who alfo entruíl:ed the fecret to one R<tdrigo de Salafar, a fellow as crooked in bis conditions as in bis body: this Rodrigo, eíl:eeming che rnatrer eafte and already well prepared to take effeét, refolved, that Pedro de Puelles fhould not have 1he honour to himfelf, but that bis Majeíl:y and the Preftdent fhould own the fignal fervke of reducing three hundred mento cheir allegiance folely to his rnanagement and valour. This pur- pofe of bishe made known ro four of bis friends, whofe furnames were Baftida, Firado, Hermojilla and Morillo, which were the names by whicb they were known: giving them w underíl:and what the intent of Pedro de Pue/les was, and rherefore to wreíl: fo íignal a fervice out of his hands, and appropriate it to rheir own merir, he propofed ro kill Pedro de Puel/.es: ro which they ali affented and agreed, as they accordingly did, and wem nexr rriorning, being Sonday, all five togerher to tbe houíe of Pedro de Puelles, and fent him up word, rbat Caprain Sala~ar was come to make hirn a vilir, and ro attend bim ro Church ro hear Mafs. Pedro de Pue/les took che vilit kindly from chem, and defired rhem to walk up into bis chamber, for he was nor as yer out of bed. Ir is reported rhat four of chem emred in, and that Rodrigo de Sa!a~ar remained at the door , to fee firíl: how matrers fucceeded , though fome fay he did goe in ; que I have heard che ftory relared ofren in rhe manner befare memioned. Thefe four Villains killed Pedro de Pue!les with their s~ ords and Daggers, and then ith Rodrigo de Sal11z.Ar they ran out imo che Mar- ket·place and declared for che King, to which ali rhe Ciry inclined and concurred with che greateíl cheerfulnefs in the World. CH A P. IX. A Cballenge is fent to Salazar to fight a Duell, on occafion of the Murther of Pedro de Puelles. Di go de Cen- teno fights with Pedro Maldonado, and enters into Cozco. R odrigo de Sa!a<:-ar and his Complices , having perforrned this Exploit, wem with all expedition to join with the Prefidem Ga/ca, and happily mee him in the Valley of Saufa: where he received them with al! the kindnefs imagi- nable, and praifed them highly for their Loyalty and Demonílrations of Alle- giance ro his Majeíl:y, which be cook notice of, and fhould be rewarded in its due [eafon : bur Diego de Vrbina, who was a friend to Pedro de Puelles, confidered that the Difcovery he had made of his Friend's fmet was the caufe of his unhap- PY fate, and tbat Rodrit,o de Sala~ar enjoyed all that honour and applaufe which was jufily due to his dead Friend : wherefore being fenfibly rouched in confci- ence for rhe faét, he publifhed in al! places the truth of the whole matter, and of the loyal intentions of Pedro de Fuelles, as befare related. He alfo threw al! the infamy he could beap up againíl: this Salazar : he declared chat he was a falfe, treacherous perfon, that he had betrayed the Vice-king E/afeo Nunne~ Vela , and revolted to Pi farro, and had followed and fided with him in all bis aétions: that he was acquainted and informed of the loyal intentions of Pedro de Pttclles ; and that to gain the glory thereof to himfelf, he had perpetrated that bloudy Mur- ther : the like he had done by Almagro the younger, whofe Servant he was, and yer he betrayed and delivered him up. Wherefore upon che whole matcer Diego de Vrbina publickly declared, that he challenged him to a fingl e duel
