Pipirro and ali his Captains were greatly íurpnzed and troublea ar th1s unexpeéted News, and thereapon with fome of rhe Citizens emred into confulration how and in what manner they were ro behave rhernfelves in chis bufinefs ; che Debates were ma_ny and l0ng, and the opinions difterent to each othet ~ but at length they were reduced to twol: fome were of opinion thar either publickly· or fecretly che Prefidf'.nt was to be killed. Orhers were of opinion dm rhey íhould iovite him to Peru, where having difcove- red ali his Papers, Infüud ions ·and Commiffion, rhar thert rhey íhould ·endea- vour to perfuade or force him to concur with them ~ and grant whatfoever rhey defired : and in tafe they could not prevail , ir was but to put him off rhen with delays, pretending that rhey had not power to condude alone, without che confeht and concurrence of ali rhe other Cities of that Kingdom, with rhat of Los Reyes: and in regard che Places and Cities were far diíbnt each from rhe other, there would be good caufe of excufe aí1d means ~o deferr rhe Aílembly far two years: And in che mean time che Prefident would be deteined a Prifoner in che Hland ofPuna, under a Guard of faithfull Souldiers, who were to be carefull to inrer- cept ,ali Lecrers which he íhould write far information ofhis Majeíl:y, by default of which they mighr íl:ill cominue under the norion of obedienc and loyal Subjeéts. Others were of opinion , that the beíl: and moíl: expedite way was, to caufe him tO remrn again into Spain , and to perfuade him thereunto with money and proviíions far his voyage ; by which it would appear, that they had treated him like a good Servant and Officer of his Majeíl:y. This marrer being agreed upan, Ambaffadours were chofen who were to negoriate chofe great Points in Spain; and to give the better counren~nce there- unto, Don Tray Geronimo de Loayfa, Arch-biíhop of Los Reyes, who was a greac Pre- late , Farher and Paíl:our of rha c City , was entreaced to accept of chat Charge 1 who being a Perfon of great e.íl:eem and intereíl: in Spain , it was prefumed chat he would be ·heard wirh che more favour ; che like alfo was deGred of the Biíhop of Santa Marra, and Friar 'I_homtU de St. Martín, who was Provincial of che Order of St. Dominic~ ; and Lore"fº de .Aldana and Gome~ de Solis were pitched upon to join with rhem in che Commifhon.
