T HU S were the peopie difcontented, fad and enraged ( thol}gh they endea- voured as much as was poffible to, conceal and diífemble it) when the Vice-king arrived about three Leagues diíl:ant frorn Rimac, where he was met by feveral Gentlemen of Qualit~ 1 and particularly by Vaca de C.a.ftro, and Don Geroni- mo de Loayfa, ( Biíhop of thac place, afterwards rnade Archbiíhop) who carne thither to conduél: him to che City. The Vice-kiog received chern all with much kindnefs and humanity, e[pecially the Biíhop and Vaca de Ca.ftro, entertaining no othe r difcourfe with them in the way as they travelled than what was of indiffe- re.nt things, and of the pleafantnefs and fruitfulnefs of that Valley. W hen they carne to the paífage of the River, he .was met by the Garcidia~ dé Ariao; who was eleél:ed Biíhop of !!2.f!_itoo, who, with the Dean and Chapter of that Church and the reíl: of the Clergy, remained there in expeél:ation of his co- .ming, and at their meeting chere was much joy and chearfulnefs. And proceeding farther untill he carne near to the City, he was met by the Jurats and Corporation of the City, accompanied with the Citizens and principal Gentry thereof; and, as all the th ree A urhours do agree in their reporr, the Comrniífary of the King's Revenue, [ )am.ed Y/len Suarez::. de Carvajal, went forth in the head of them al! ; and being the c hief o f the Corporation, Qid in the name thereof offer an Oath to the Vice-king, whereby he was ro fwear that he would maimain the Privileges, Franchifes and Immunities which the Conquerours and Inhabitants of Peru had received and did hold of his Majeíl:y; and that in the Coúrts of Juíl:ice he would receive their Petitions and give ear to che Reafons they íhould offer againíl: che new Regularions. The Vice-king would fwear no otherwife than tbat he would perforrn ali that which was conducing to the King's fervice and to the benefit of the Countrey; at which many took exceptions, and faid that he fwore with equivocations and what would admit of a double meaning.
