OR the better Information and Satisfaétion, as well of the prefent as of fu. cure Ages, ic will be neceífary to know what chings were not in Peru at the time when che Spaniards fuíl: entred into Peru; and therefore 1 have thought fit to make a particúlar Chapter thereof, to enurnerate ~ow many thin_gs th~f: peo-. ple wanted, which we eíl:eem neceffary for che wellfare and col1\7ement livrng of Mankind, and yet notwithílanding they lived happily, and contenced wichout . them. In che firíl: place we muíl: know that chey neicher had Horfes nor Mares for their fervice in War, or for cheir delighc and divertiíement, chey had no Cows, nor had cheyºOxen to plow cheir Lands, and prepare chem for the feed; neicher had tbey Camels, nor Alfes, nor Mules for cheir Carriages or Bunhens; nor had tbey Sheep, as we have in Spain, which yield us both Food and Clorhing; nor had chey Hogs, which yield us Salt-fleíl1, and Bacon, and Leacher to make dur Bottels; nor had chey Dogs of any good race, fuch as Grey-hounds, Beagles, Spannels, Wacer-dogs and Tumblers; nor had chey Mafüffs to keep rheir.Flocks, or Lap-dogs for pleafure of che Ladies, bue onely a company of Curs of all forcs and ftzes, which were good for nothing. Nor had chey Whear, or Barly, or Wine, or Oil, nor Fruir, nor Pulle, as we have in ·Spain; o[ all which chings we íliall creat diíl:inétly, and of che manner how, and when chey were broughc out of Spain inco chofe pares. As to che Horfes and Mares, che Spaniards broughc chem over with chernfelves, having been very ferviceable and ufefull to chem in making cheir Conqueíl:s in the new World, of which che Jndians had no greac nece!Iity; for being born and bred in che craggy and íl:eep Mouncains, chey became namrally hardy, and nimble of fooc , being very aétive in climbing afcencs, and deícending again down che aeepeíl Precipices. The firíl: were landed in che Iíle of Cuba, and Sr. Domingo, and the ocher Iíl and s of Barvolento, as chey· were difcovered and fubdued; where chey increafed, and rnultiplied abundancly, and chence they were tranfported to Mexico and Peru, for cheir fervice and ufe in chofe Conqueíls. Ar firíl, for wanr of care in che Maíl:ers, who pac their Horfes out to paílure looíe, and into places withouc fences they could not eafily be cacched again; and fo roving in the Moumains, chey became wild., flying like Deer, ar che light of aMan, and not being íeized or preyecl upon by any fierce Creacure , they increafed and multiplied in grear abundance. · The Sprmiards who inhabited che Hlands, obferving how neceffary Horíes were for che Conqueíl:s; and che,ir Counc ries produced Cuch as were very good, enh:rn- fed che prices of thern to a confiderable race. Tliere were cerrain Men who kept thircy, forty, fifty Horfes in cheir Srables,. as v.e have mencioned in our Hiílory of che Florida. The way of caking che Coles was in a cercain Park, which chey had encornpaífed with Pales, raiíed ar fome convenienc Avenues of.the Moumains, where are Coves, called CavantU , of three or four Leagues wide, where rhe Horfes and Coles defcending towards che Evening to feed, fome períons who keep watch in Trees give notice chereof; and chen fourreen or fifreen Men on Hvrfe· back, riding in amongíl: chem, drive them wichin che pale, which chen rhey en- cloíe, and cafhng Halrers about che Necks of chofe Coles which are abouc chree 01• four Years old, chey tie cbem to crees, leccing e 1e Mares go and e[cape as rhey pleaíe; che Coles remain cied in tbis manner for three or four days, jumping and leapiog untíll being weakned with wearineís, and Hunger, they yield rhemíelves ro
