And being in the Countrey of the GhichM, he employed and fubíl:itmed certain Vifitors to fürvey the Kingdoni of Tucma, called by the Spaniards Tucuman, and others to vifit Chile; and wich them .he fent many Vefi:- ments, of fuch fort as che Inca himfelf wore, and other Curiofities for the Gover- mmrs, Capcains, and ocher Miniílers of che King; as alfo for the Curaca;, who were Natives of thofe Coumries, that fo th~y might in the Narne of the Inca ob- lige them with chofe Prefents which were highly eíl:eerned. This Vifüation or Progrefs being made, in- which.four Years were fpent, he commanded Souldiérs to be levied, for che farther Conqueíl: of Tumpiz, to the Northward, where it íl:retches it felf along che Sea·Coaíl:; and whilíl: he refided in thJ Province of the Cannaru, which was the way, as he thought 2 that did Iead to fl..!!.itu, that he might the better defcend for Conqueíl: of rhat Coafl:, News · was brought to him, that the Inhabitants of the great Province of Chachapuya-r, feeing ·him engaged in Wars and 'Conqueíl:s of great importance, took that oppor- tunity to rnake a Rebellion; and confiding in the faíl:nefs of their craggy and mountainous Countrey, and in che numbers of their People, which were íl:urdy and íl:om, had made a general Maífacre of all the Governours and CaRtains, and many of che Souldiery; which the Inca had appoimed to prefide over them; and fuch of the Sould1ers, whom they had fp1red, they made Slaves to ferve them in che bafeíl: Drudgeries, ~nd meaneíl: Offices.
