Amongíl: other Calamities the Earchquake about Are: quepa is recounced as one, which ac lengrh ended in fuch a terrible irruption of firé from a certain Hill, which for che fpace of twenty days cominu~lly threw up fuch quamities of Aíhes and Sand , as in che pares round abqut covered che Earth two yards chick, and in places farther offat leaíl: a yard, and where leafr, a quarter of a yard deép, for che fpace of thirty or fourcy Leagues round in che Co.uncrey of Arequepa; whereby all cheir Vines and Com Lands were .fpoiled, their Trees and Fruits fcorched and blaíl:ed; and all theit Cattel periíhed for wanc of paíture. Th~ir Cows and Oxen lay dead in Droves of five hundred in·a place, and cheir Flocks ofSheep, and Goacs, and Hogs lay buried in thefe Aíhes. ·Many Houfes were overwhelmed wlth che weight of che Earch and Sand, which chis irru pciori , threw up, fuch as remained were preferved by che diligehce of chofe Maíl:ers w.ho always cleared and chrew them off as they carne; all ·whkh was accomp anied with fuch dreadfull Flaíhes of Lighming, and claps ofThunder, as were heard and feen at thirty Leagues diíl:ance from che Confines of Arequepa; and fo thick were the Clouds of Sand and Aíhes, which were thrown up ;, that for many days they fo obfcured che Sun, that they were forced to Hght Candles for performancé of their neceílary occafions. Thefe and the like particulars .were advifed from ' that City, and che adjacent pares, che which we llave fuccinétly touthed, refer- ting our felves for a more full Relation thereof to che Hiíl:orians ·<:>f chofe times, whofe bufinefs it is to defcribe all che particulars hereof more at large. Howfoever we !hall relace che misfortunes of Chili, as they were advifed in wri- ting from thence, becaufe they come pertinent to che foregoing íl:ory of che /~ tl.ian1 of.Arauca,. and are '?~fequenc~ of che lnfurreétion ~e~un in the Year 1f5 3. and whfch contmued unt11l che begmnmg of 1603 . nor is ic known when there will be an end thereof, in regard that after forcy nine yeárs fince chis Rebellion be- gan, (during ·which time diey have endured all the miferies of Fire and Sword ) yet füll chofe troubles feem rather to increafe than abate, as _plainly appears by che intelligences which we have extraéted from a Lecter written from ah Inhabitant of the City of Sanfliago in Chili, which carne at che fume time with che relatioti of the Calamicies of Arequepa. Thefe Advices were delivered to me by a Gen- tleman who was my Friend, and had lived in Peru, and íerveq in·quality of á Cajltain agaíníl: che Rebels in che Kingdom of fl:!.itu, when they mutined on oc- caíion of che great Taxes which were laid upon tliem, hisName was M~rtin Cuafo; a perfon who hath done greac Service to che 0own of Spain.
