Royal Commentarie1. BooK VU. ' ' rhey wich great care and diligence iníl:illed intp the Minds of their people, did " propagare the Law, which ~h.e light of ~ature taug~t them_; fo alfo ought " we with the fame care and d1hgence endeavour to contmue th1s excellent me- " thod, as the moíl: expedite means to inculqtte the myíl:eries of the Gofpel; and " therefore it is great pity, and much to be lamented, that 011r Chriíl:ian Gover- " nours, who omit no ways or contrivances to fubjugace that people to che bon- ' ' dage of cheir fecular power, íhould be more remifs in thofe Courfes, which " rend to che advancement of the Catholick Faith , than the Gentiles were " of their Idolatrous Woríhip. Thus far are the Words of B/M Va /era, · which - becaufe chey tend to the advancémént ofClíriíl:ianity, I have thought fit to infert here; and then afcerwards, like a leatned man, and one skilfull in Tongues, he proceeds to compare the Language of Peru with che Latin, and Greek, and He- brew; and then proceeds to.confute the Opinion of l hofe who fanlie, thac thefe Jndians of the new World were defcended from the Jews, and for proof thereof they produce fome Hebrew words which have a fimilirude w.íth che general Lan- guage of Peru, though they are not alike in fignification, but onely in che found or accent. And on chis occafion, amongíl: many other Curiofities and Idioms be- longing to this general Tangue, he obferves thac[ou, b, d, f, g, i, and x, are all wanting in the Peruvian Speech, and for that reafon, had diey been Jews, who are fo affeél:ionate to their Father Ahrah11m, that his Name is never out of their mouths, they could never have wanted thac letter ( h) which is neceffary to exprefs a true found of rhat beloved Narne: To which we may farther add, that in all their Language they have no word with cwo Confoaants together, füch as bra, era, ero, pla, pri, and the like; fo that they do not onely wam the Letcer (b) but alfo che fyllable bra, which are neceffary for Jews to exprefs the Name of their beloved Pacriarch; and though ir may be objeékd, that this Language of Peru hach many fyllables with rwo Confonams coming together, 'füch as Papri, Huacra, Rocro, Pocra, Chacra, Llac/la, 'Chocllo, and the like, yet it is to be under- íl:ood, chat thefe <i::onfonants are dif-joined in their pronunciation; as for exam- · ple, Pap-ri, Huac-ra, Roe-ro, L!ac-lla, and che Hke, befides which, fot want 0f a u·ue obfervation, the Spaniard.r have many corruptions amongíl: them; as for Pampa, they fay bamba, for Inca Inga, for Roe-ro Loe-ro, and che like; as we íhall hereafter make app€ar, as thefe words do occaftonally occur ; . and fo we !hall recur again unto our Hillory.
