Royal Commentarie~. ~OOK Vl CH A P. XXVI. that the Prince .himfelf underwent the rigoúr of Approhá- tion, and that they dealt more feverely witb him than . . witb others. ' D Uring tlie t~ of Probation one of the Captains, or..fyfafier5 of ~hefe Cer~monies, did every day make a Speech to the N0v1tiates, pumng them m rnind of their lofty Lineage, and defcen~ency from th~ ·sl!fl, repeating the noble and heroick Attions performed and atch1eved by rheir Kings, and other famous Princes of che Royal Bloud; and that according to·cheir Examples tliey ought ro fignálize their Vertue and Valour, towards che enlargement of th~ir Dominions. and wich generous Coníl:ancy and Patience exert ali the faculties of Meroick Souls. Moreover they recomniended to them Clemency, Piecy, and Gentlenefs . towards the poo~, Impartia)ity i~ their Jufüce, ~nd to fee that none di~ Wrong wichout due pumíhment, to be liberal atfd magmficem, as became the bnght Sons of fo glorious a Father :· and in fum, they infüutkd them in all chofe Leétures of Morality.unto which their Philofophy had as yet atcained, ever inculcacing the re. membrance of their more than Humane Race, and of their Defcent from che Ce. lefüal Region.. They made them alfo íleep on the ground, walk bare-foor, exer- . ciíing chem in ali orlier points ofhardfhip- which was incident to a Souldier's Life. Nor was che Prince, who was the Eldeíl: Son, and Hetr to the Inca, exempted from thefe Exercifes ofProbation, or creaced wich lefs rigoúr or feverity chan che others, unlefs perhaps the greatnefs of his Birth might excufe him from the labour and fatigue of the Race, which being run by ochers, the Flag, which became the prize and reward of che moUfwifr, was by him laid at the Feec of che Prince, as his undoubced righr, to ~hom alfo the Inheritance of the Kingdom appertained; bm as to all otber E;xercifes, fuch as Faíl:ings, rnilitary Difcipline, making his own Arrns, and Shoes, íleeping on che ground, eacing and faring hardly, and marching bare-fo6c, they were required of him, as che moíl: neceífary qualities belottging et> a Prince, who being exalted above all ochers in the fublime Station of his Power and Sovereignty, was alfo to excell orhers in his Vermes and Ahili- ties, .both of Body and Mind: For in cafe at any time cheir Princes fhould be re- duced to an equality of Fortúne, it wou!Cl not become the Royalty of cheir Per~ fons to be lefs wonh than other Men, or lefs able to contend wich che crofs ac- cidents of an adverfe condition; for as chey had che advamage of others_, boch in Profperity and Adverfity, fo oughr. chey to be endued with predominant Vercues (eípecially fuch as are warUke) above che ordinary capacicy and fcantling of che multitude. By virtue of fuch Exceijencies as thefe, they were of OpiniOn, that the Prince deferved che Inheritance, and claimed it on a better Title, than of being born Heir to bis Father. They were of opinion alfo, chac it was neceffary for Kings and Princes to have tried and experlenced in their own Perfons che Labou.rs and .Difficu.lcies ofWar, thac fo they might be more fenfible, and betcer able to judge ofche merits, and gratifie the hazards of their Souldiers. During ali this time of Approbacion, which continued for che fpace of one New Moon to anocher, the .Prince went habited in the moíl: poor and mean Clothing that can be irnagined, being ali made up with rags and parches; with which he was not a!hamed to ap· pear in publick, fo often as b is occafions required: And chis was done \vith chis 'farther imem, thac when.he fhould behold himfelf on che Throne of hisMajeíly, he fhould look clo wn from c hence with a compaffionate Eye on che poor in re. membrance that he himfelf was once one of chac number, and on thac ~ore en· d~aring his Perfon to the1;i wich ~riendfhip and Charity he might dujy clailll che T1tle of Huachacuyac, wh1ch íignifies a Lover of the Poor.
