Royal Commentaries. " Woríbip · and co íhare a prop:>rtion of che veneration which was owing to " him the ~nely God, unto che ~un, to che Thunder, and ocher Crearures who " had no other Being, Verme and Beauty, but fuch ªs chey received from him ; " .and that therefore he was now come to make known to him , chat his Habita- " tion was in Heaven where he was Worfhipped under the Ticle of Viracocha p a- " chayachachic, which íignifies che Univerfal Creatour of all things. And that " they might be affiired of che truth hereof; and chat it was no Dream, or idle ' ' fancy, he promifed to raife him People and Armies by his Omnipotent power; ' ' and chat chough che Chanw were numerous and viétorious, yet he would fend " him invifible Troops, and fuch as fhould not be known from whence they carne, " íhould aid and fuccour him againíl: his Enemies. Wich chis aífurance and belief ' ' he raifed his Men, which flocked to him in chofe Numbers, chac he obtained " a Viétory; and afcerwards depofing both his Facher, and his Eldet Brocher, he " rnade himfelf ~bfolute and Sovereign Prince of che Empire. ·From che time " of which Viétory he Efiablifhed a La~, chac Yimocha íhould be Worfbipped " and Adored as che fole and Supreme Lord of the Univerfe ; and that che Ima- ,, ges ofthe Sun andThunder íhould bow before his ldol, and doe him reverence ~ " and from that time afterwards che Image of Vzracoch.i was exalted above chofe " of tne--Sun and che Thunder, and che othe~ Minor GHacai, or Lictle Deities. ' ' And chough chis Inca Tupanqui did affign, and fet out Lands and Flocks for che " maintenance of che Sun and Thunger.; yet he made no Efiabliíhment for che " Vir11cocha, .by reafon chac he being -the lTni\terfal Lmd, and Creacour of all, con- " tained All-fufficiency wichin himfelf, having no need of fupplies from che Crea- ~' cures which his Power had made. . ~' After chis Battel was ended with Signal Viél:ory over che Chanw, he decla.: " red to bis Souldiers, chat it was not by cheir force and Valour that cheir Ene- " mies were fubdued, bue it was by the Aid and Affiílence of Numbers of Men " wich great Beards, which che Viracocha had fent to fight for them, and that chey " were invifible to ali, bue to himfelf: And that now theirWork being finiíhed " they were recurned again to their former invifible Beings, and Nature ofStones; " Howfoever, it feemed neither decent, nor convenien.t to omic due ackñowledg- cc menes, even to chofe infenfible Beings, which none but he could know ; and " therefore going into che Mouncains, he caíl up heaps of Stones, which he cul- " led and feparated with his own hands from che refr, fetting them up for GHaw " or Demi-gods, commanding Adoration and Sacrifices to be offered co them' " calling them by the Name of PururaHcas, the which they carried wich them t~ ' ' the Wars wich greac devotion. And fuch credit did chis Fable gain in their " minds, that by force of this fuperfütious impreffion, chis Inca obcained many 1 " great and fignal Viétories. Thus far are che Words of Aco.fta, which agree in che fubfrance wich what we have before related ; but as to what he alledges concern- ing che Image of Viracocha, that it was exalted above che Idol of che Sun ; it was a novelty, and new manner of Worfhip imroduced by che lndians, in compliance with che Spaniards : For -it is amifiake to conceive, that they apprehended any no- cion of the Name of God, wich a peculiar refpeét of bis Supreme and Omni¡:io- tent Eífence , for chey had no conceit of any but of two Deities, one was che invifible and unknown, which was the Pachacamac; tbe ocher was che Sun, which was clear and apparent ro che fight of che Univerfe ; bue as to Viracocha and ocher IncM, they eíleemed chem as Children, and Off.fpring of che Sun.
