Royal Commentafies. BooK IV. The J~ca leaving his Officers to receive their fubmiffion , proceeded forward in his Conqueíl:s to another Province called Vramarca, wJ:ich a!ío is furnamed chanca and is a fmall Cermtrey, bue very populous, and mhab1ted by fuch a hardy ~nd wa~-like Nation; chat had their Numbers been équal to their Courage, they had been capable to have made a íl:ouc and coníiderable refül:ance; for cnat che people on chls fide were not fo eafie, and fimple, and fond of che Incas, apd cheir Government, as were chofe of Contifuyu and Coll11fuyu; howfoever, to be íhorr, chofe of Vramarca fubmitted, bue with much relaétancy, and againíl: the.it inclinacions. Thence che Inca marched forwards to the people called Hawcóh 111ú/Q and Vi/lea, named by the Sp11niards Vilcas, who with che fame unwillingnefs yiel- ded to che power of che Inca; for that thefe people, being all Chancas, were Lorcts themfelves of divers Provinces, which by force of Arms they had fubdued, and did ditly enlarge cheir Dominions,, with which their ambition and covetoufne·t5 increafing, they could not, without difficulcy, forego their Ufurpations and Ty- ranny over others, to yield themfelves to che fame conditions ,, che which re- fraétary humout of theirs the Inca Roca obfervihg, reproved in them wich fev.ere reprehenf 1011; and though they recéived his Admonitions with Mortificarion and Anger, yet they duríl: not openly own and difcover their diílike. In both cheíe Provinces their cuíl:ome was to Sacrifice Cbildren to their Gods at their principa:l Feaíl:s; ofwhich che Inca being informed, he made a difcourfe to them of che in- humanity and unreafonableneíS of fuch a cuíl:ome, and chat for che fueure rhey íhould Adore che Sun for their God , and receive che Scamres and OrdinanceS which he had gi.ven them ; declaring to them by his own moueh, that he would exaét che life of every Child at their hands, whom they fhould in that manóer attempt to deíl:roy ; and that in p nifhment for the offence, he would defüoy and root out their whole Nation, and give their Coumrey to be inhabited by a betcer fort of people, of more bowels and compaffion, who íhould love and che~ rifh rheir own bloud; as nacure required them. Nothing could come more ddle- full and fad, than chis news to the Ears of rhefe people, who were perfüaded by the Devíls, whom they woríhipped for their Gods, that chis Sacrifice of tender Infams was moíl: acceptable of any to the Infernal Powers. · . From Vi/lea he rook the way .on che left hand, and marched Weíl:ward, tó· wards che Sea-coaíl:, and entred one of thofe cwo Provinces, ·which are both fiy- , led by rhe name of Su/la, though for diílinétion fake one of them is called Vt11m- fulla : thefe two Provinces cornprehend under chem many Narions of diffoteñt Names, fome of them being foil of people, others having but few. And ió the Hiíl:ories of chefe matters, to avoid tedious difcourfes, they repon, char che Num- ber .of chem might be of about forty thoufand .·FamiHes,, in rhe fubduing of which, che Inca is faid to have fpent much tim€, and fome report three years; which were chiefly taken up in the perfüafions and gentle Arts which the Inca ufed for reducing of tbat people, being more defirous to conquer then.1 by kínd- nefs, than rhe feverity of Arms. For thofe Jndians confiding much in their own Numbers, and Are of War, did ofce'n incline to a breach, anda defence of chem- felves ; bue that the moderation of rhe Inca, and bis prudent conduét of a:ffuirs was füch, that with time he reduced them to his fervice, and a willingnefs to re- ceive his Laws, and füch Governours and Miniíl:ers as he was pleafed to coníl:i- tute over rhem ,, and then afrerwards wirh this füccefs and viétory he retutned to Couo. In thefe tW<? Provinces of Su/la and Vtr,tmfa!la, there were abo.ut chirty cwo years paíl:, fomf/ ve1y rich Mines difcoveted of Silver, and Qlli ck-íilve r ; th@ , látter of which is very lífefull in Melting the Silvei· Ore. - .
