The Prince Sayri Tuprtc hada fancy to have the name of Diego (which is ']ame.r) fuperadded to him at his Baptifm, in refpeét to that glorious Apoftle St. 'James · who according to a Tradition received from his Father, and his Captains, ap~ peared miraculotlfly in favour and defence of the Spaniard.s, when they were befieged in that Gity. The Inhabitants of the City honoured the day of the ln- ca's Baptifl)l with the Cport of Bulls, and throwing Dares, ahd other fignals of joy, appearing in rich Attire and cofl:ly Liveries. I my felf am an Eye-witnefs thereof, having been a chief Aétor in thefe divertifements. After thefe Fefri- vals were OVe'r, and fhat the Caciques had-made their Vifüs; the Inca remained fome days in the Converfation of his Friends, and enjoyment of hi,mfelf with eafe and plenty, · during which time he vifited that farnous fortrefs which his Anceftors had buih; much admiring to fee it fallen to decay, and partly de- moliihed by thofe, whofe Glory and Honour it was to have kept up fuch a Mo- nument and Trophy of their Conquefts ; as this Hi-ftory teftifies. He alfo vifüed the Cathedral Church, and the Convent of our Lady of the Merced.s, . and of St. Francis, and St. Dominick...; in all which he adored th~ moft Holy Sacra- ment, calling it Pachacamac, Pachacamac, (which is God of Heaven and Earth.) And with the like profound Reverence he worlhipped the Image of our Lady, cafüng it Mother of God. Tho' fome malitious Men, who fpeak well of none, feeing lúm with great Devotion on bis knees before the Moft Hol y Sacramenl! in the Church of St. Dominick.., fa id, that he was worfhipping the Sun his Fa- ther, and tbe bodies ofhis Anceftors which were interred in that Church.He alfo vifited the Houfes of the Selell; Virgins dedicated to the Sun : but paffed by the habitation ofhis Anceíl:ors,which were totally demoliíhed,and other newEdifices ereóted by the Spaniards in their places.
