The Frier and Betan¡os being come to Coz.ca, it was order- ed, That . they íhould remain behind, whilft the Govcrnour Mttnnoz. , artd Dan- na Beatriz. went before the Ambaffadours, with her Son ']ohn Sierra, to the Inca. Which being fo agreed,the Frier and Beúm¡as went ont of theCity t hree days be- fare them, pretending to fr ay and expeél: them on the road: But to gai n t he honour of being the fir ft Arnbaffadours, advanced as far as the Bridge call ed Chuqitichaca, which borders on the Ju rifdi él: ion of the Inca:And having with great di fficulty paffed the Bridge; they were detained by .the l ndian Souldiers, who kept watch and guard on that fide, and there kept w1thout other hur t or da- mage done to them ; not fuffering them to proceed forward, nor return back again ; and fo remained until thc next day, when ']ohn Sierra, with the Ambaf- fadours from the Inca carne to rhem, with teu,other Indians who were fen t to nieet the Ambaífadours: In fine, ']ohn Sierra, and the Ambaffadours were per- mitted to proceed, but Betan¡ os and the Frier were detained: The I nca being informed that ']ahn Sierra was near at hand, and alfo that a Frier and Be- tan¡os who were Ambalfadours from the Vice-King were not far diftant ' ; he difpeeded a Captain with 200 lndian Souldiers, (whom they called Caribdes, and are of that forr, who eat the Enemies which they take in the War) to fignifie.to the Ambalfadours, that the l nca' s pleafure was, tllat they íhould de- dar~ the M effage they brpught unto his qen~ral. ']ahn Sierra h:iving thus delivered his Meffage, Betanfos and the Fner were alfo called and admitted to the fame place ; of whom they demanded the fame quefl:ions, to fee what difference there was in the pro- pofals which were made. · The F rier and Betan fOS produced the w riting of Pardon, and declared the fubfl:ance of the Embafly upon which they were employed, and delivered the PrefenE which the Vice-King fent to the Inca of feveral pieces of V elvet, and Damask, and two Cups of fil ver gilded,together with other tbings of curiofity. After which the General and Captains fent two Indians, who had been prefent at ali the difcourfe, to give a relation to the Inca o[ the patticu- lars which had palfed; which when the Inca had heard, and thought well upon, he gave an(wer, That the Ambaífadours fhould immediately return from whence they carne, with their Letters, Aél: of Pardon, and Prefents 1 for that he would not have to do with the Vice-King, bnt remain free; and independent of him, ·as he had hitherto done.. But as John Sierra, and the reft were departed, orders were brought after them by two l n- t.fi ans, that they fhould return immediately, and appear before the 'Inca, to gi ve him and his Captaios an account in perfon of the Embafly they had bronght; and being on their way, and not above four Leagues from the /nea, another Command was given that ']ohn Sierr11 íllould come alone,. and · L11111 - that 993
